A wave of spam is currently targeting NetID@georgetown.edu addresses as part of a phishing scheme designed to obtain sensitive information. The University Information Security Office (UISO) is encouraging everyone to DELETE any suspicious e-mails of this type.
In particular, please be on the look out for any e-mails with the subject line "RE: IMPORTANT EMAIL ACCOUNT VERIFICATION UPDATE." The e-mail sender is Online Services. The content of the e-mail encourages users to update their e-mail identity because of a current database and e-mail account upgrade. This is a malicious e-mail. Please delete it immediately!
There is no Online Services group at Georgetown University.
It is important to remember that you will never be asked for your password or other sensitive information via e-mail.
For more information about phishing and how to protect your information, please visit the UISO website at security.georgetown.edu. You can also call the security office at 202-687-3031.
If you have already responded to this false e-mail with your information, please contact the UIS Help Desk immediately to change your NetID password. Faculty and staff can reach the Help Desk at 202-687-4949, press 1. Students should call the Student Help Desk at 202-687-4577.
