Complete this simple information security checklist and make it a habit to follow the tips.
Getting Started
Physical Security
- Never leave your notebook unattended in public places! It only takes seconds for someone to swipe your computer.
- If you live in a dorm, discuss with your roommate(s) how to secure your computers.
- Secure your computer to a permanent fixture with a laptop cable or other anti-theft device.
- Before you leave your room, always lock the screen or logout, and lock doors and windows.
- Register your computer with the Department of Public Safety, call (202) 687-4343.
Digital Security
- Use a unique password to protect your NetID. Click here for password guidelines.
- Never tape passwords to your computer monitor!!
- Set up automatic updates for your operating system. Windows users should visit the UIS documentation.
- Install the latest patches and updates for desktop software, such as your Web browser, word processor and instant messaging client. Make periodic visits to the software provider's Web site.

- Set up your computer firewall.
Secure Computing
- Avoid surfing or shopping at disreputable Web sites.
- Remember to make backups of your work!!
