Purpose 

Georgetown University Information Services has developed and implemented the Information HEOA (Higher Education Opportunity Act) DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) policy and procedures to address and comply with all copyright laws and with all and to minimize risk to the University as an Internet Service Provider. 

UIS has a legal obligation to have adopted, reasonably implemented, and informed subscribers and account holders of this policy that provides for the handling of DMCA notices, informing alleged copyright infringers, and the subsequent associated corrective actions. 

Scope 

The HEOA DMCA policy and supporting requirements apply to all faculty, staff, researchers, affiliates, suppliers, and students who use the University networks for business, research, academics, and pleasure. 

Policy 

In accordance with the requirements of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) pertaining to peer-to-peer file sharing and copyrighted material, UIS prohibits the use of the Georgetown network for unauthorized distribution of copyrighted materials through illegal downloading or peer-to-peer distribution of intellectual property.  

This policy also protects the software available for use on University computers. The software provided through the University for use by faculty, staff, and students may be used only on computing equipment as specified in the various software licenses.  Faculty, staff, or students must not copy or reproduce any licensed software or intellectual property found on University computing equipment, except as expressly permitted by the software license, author, or granting authority.  Faculty, staff, and students may not use unauthorized copies of licensed software on University-owned computers.
